Hands of different sizes on top of eachother
In March, a group of foster families and staff from Action for Children in Northern Ireland attended the Giant Family Day out, part of Young at Arts’ Belfast Children’s Festival. Here, one of the families speaks about their day.

"I have two young people living with us and I was excited by the programme Young at Art put together for us and other Action for Children families. There were a number of exciting events - the U105 Roadshow, which had lots of exciting giveaways; a penalty shoot out with the Belfast Giants; ‘Turnabout’ – a performance from Maiden Voyage Dance in St. Anne’s Cathedral; and a staging of Gabriel García Márquez’s ‘A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings’ in The MAC.

On the day the sun was shining as we reached Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter – which was the hub for the Giant Family Day Out. It was great to see so many families out and about, enjoying the good weather and all the pop-up performances and activities. All of the staff and volunteers were so helpful and full of fun, especially our Young at Art guide who made us feel like VIPs.

Our favourite part of the day was the tour and demonstration from Circusful – a Community Circus School. We had no idea it existed in Belfast and there were so many skilled people showing us their talents. They were also so kind and patient with our kids who wanted to play and copy what they were doing. They still treasure their wee badges they got on the day!

It was great to be a part of Young at Art’s Giant Family Day Out, especially as it gave us the opportunity to see foster carers and Action for Children staff in a social setting having fun. We would like to thank Young at Art for having us along – we can’t wait to visit again next year!"
