Fighting Words Belfast

Fighting Words Belfast is a new creative writing project for children and young people in Northern Ireland. We aim to unlock creativity and inspire imagination, using storytelling to encourage self-expression, build creative confidence and foster a love of literature in all who visit.

We run free workshops for primary and secondary school groups, during which participants work collaboratively and individually to create a piece of writing unique to them. Workshops for primary school students take place in the morning and for secondary school students in the afternoon, with each workshop lasting two hours.

There are lots of ways to get involved as a volunteer:

  • writing mentors work with participants one-on-one to offer support and encouragement to help them develop their ideas and writing
  • the storyteller leads the workshop, teasing out ideas and guiding participants as they write their story
  • the story-scribe captures the words of the participants, typing their story up on screen so they can see it coming together in real time
  • the story-illustrator translates participants’ words into images, creating simple illustrations to accompany their story
  • workshop helpers assist with all aspects of the workshop, bringing the magic and fun of storytelling to life
